מתחילים מסוג השדה האקוסטי, תחום התדר, רמות הקול ומתח הקיטוב. לאחר מכן מתאימים קדם־מגבר, חיבור וציוד מדידה לפי הדגם שנבחר.
קפסולות שונות מכוונות לתגובת שדה שונה. בוחרים לפי אופן החשיפה לקול, למשל מדידה בשדה חופשי לעומת מדידה בחלל או במצמד, ומשתמשים בתיקונים המתאימים.
קיטוב מראש מתייחס לשדה החשמלי בקפסולה. קדם־המגבר עדיין דורש הזנה מתאימה; בקפסולה לקיטוב חיצוני יש לספק גם את מתח הקיטוב הנדרש.
במשפחה המתועדת, קפסולות קטנות יותר מאפשרות בדרך כלל גבולות תדר ורמות קול גבוהים יותר, במחיר רגישות נמוכה יותר. ההכרעה נעשית לפי מפרט הדגם.
יש להשתמש בתעודת הכיול האישית, הכוללת את תגובת התדר ונתוני הקפסולה, יחד עם נתוני קדם־המגבר והתצורה המחוברת.
