On 22 September 2026 Micro-Epsilon presented new variants of its CFS colour sensors that withstand pressures up to 2,400 bar and temperatures up to +500 °C. They are mounted directly in the extruder and detect colour changes where they occur, when extruding plastics, gelatin and other highly viscous materials.

Overheating during extrusion can cause thermal damage, burning or discoloration. Continuous colour measurement detects even small changes early, so the process can be corrected before defective material moves on.

Depending on the material, measurement uses transmission or reflection: CFS3 sensors for transparent media such as gelatin, CFS4 sensors for opaque materials such as plastics. With the colorSENSOR CFO250 controller the manufacturer states a repeatability of ΔE ≤ 0.3. The sensors connect to the extruder through 1/2″-20 UNF or M12 threads.
