Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about our products and services

Specify grid pattern, grid length, resistance and temperature-response matching to the test material. Single-direction gauges, rosettes and other grid arrangements are available. Also select wiring and connections when they form part of the configuration, rather than treating all gauges in a series as identical components.

Temperature changes expand the component and can appear as strain even without mechanical loading. Select a self-compensated gauge according to the material coefficient of thermal expansion. This reduces apparent strain but does not necessarily remove all temperature effects in the system.

Cable resistance forms part of the measuring circuit and changes with temperature. It can affect zero and effective sensitivity. A multiwire connection can compensate for part of this effect when supported by the amplifier and bridge arrangement, so select wiring as part of the measurement chain.

No. Excitation causes self-heating of the strain gauge. If heat is not transferred effectively into the component, a temperature difference can disturb compensation. Respect the permitted gauge excitation and the bonding and heat-transfer conditions rather than choosing voltage only for signal amplitude.

The adhesive transfers strain from the component to the gauge. At excessive temperature it can soften and creep, changing strain transfer and the result. Check adhesive temperature limits separately from the limits of the strain gauge.

Yes, when the environment requires it. Moisture absorbed by the carrier and adhesive can cause zero drift. Select protective covering for the measuring point and its environment. An exposed bonded gauge should not be assigned the protection rating of an enclosed sensor.
