Define frequency range and sound-level range first. Then match the microphone to the acoustic field and measurement arrangement.
Free-field microphones address sound mainly from one direction; diffuse-field microphones address many directions; pressure microphones suit appropriate enclosed cavities or surface arrangements. Select for the measurement conditions.
Polarization creates the cartridge electric field and can be internal or external. Preamplifier power is a separate requirement, supplied through the appropriate interface, such as CCLD or a dedicated microphone input.
Array processing uses phase differences between channels, not amplitude alone. For example, Type 4958 provides phase matching and transfer-function data in TEDS for supporting systems.
Yes. Wind and rain protection do not replace calibration. A system such as Type 4952 supports acoustic calibration and CIC remote verification of the microphone, preamplifier and cabling.
The upper dynamic-range limit also depends on permitted distortion and the electrical chain. For example, Type 4958 documents 140 dB at THD below 3%, under the specified current-source conditions. Also check that the preamplifier and acquisition input do not clip earlier.
